MLB to Bonds: Pass Hank First, Then We'll Call You Great

Barry Bonds passing Babe Ruth's baseball record is nothing.

At least that's what Major League Baseball (MLB) thinks.

''Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record,'' MLB Commissioner, Bud Selig said. ''We don't celebrate anybody the second or third time in,'' he added.

Apparently, the MLB is not planning any celebrations for the controversial Barry Bonds if the Giants slugger overtakes Babe Ruth's 714 home runs.

Bonds has been accused of steroids use for several seasons now and that has definitely overshadowed Bonds' chase for baseball immortality this year. In the book, ''Game of Shadows,'' it details allegations against him.

A federal grand jury is investigating whether he committed perjury when he told another grand jury that he had never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs.

Barry Bonds hit his 711th home run last Wednesday, making him three more runs closer in equaling the feat of ''the Babe.'' Commissioner Bud Selig doesn't have plans in traveling to San Francisco, Milwaukee or Philadelphia, where the Giants will play next week as Bonds nears Ruth.

''We celebrate new records, that's what we do. We're being consistent,'' Selig said during the Associated Press Sports Editors annual meeting with league commissioners. ''There's nothing to read into that.''

''He's had a remarkable career. Whatever happens, happens,'' Selig said. ''We're going to let nature take its course. Commissioners don't sit around and say, 'I hope this guy breaks it or not.''

Delaying Bonds' Bid for MLB Immortality

San Francisco Giants' Barry Bonds has been seeing intentional walks the past few days.

Yes, apparently, other pitchers would rather put Barry Bonds on first base rather than let him swing at those fast balls and make a run for Babe Ruth's ever legendary Major League Baseball (MLB) record.

As a result, Bonds STILL is six homeruns away from overtaking ''the Babe.''

Ever since Bonds' alleged steroids issue, this Giants slugger became the talk in all of baseball. Will the MLB opt to omit all those milestones Bonds accomplished with those steroids? Is it fair to take all of it away from a man who was cheating in the first place?

With the way they've been pitching to the guy, you can very well forget that. Bonds even went for a total of ten walks in one of San Francisco's games. Not even a hefty dose of the substance can help the Giants slugger now.

So what does Bonds do?

Well, he just keeps on helping his team win in anyway he can. Besides, with a hundred or so more games to play in this young season, overtaking the Babe is inevitable, like it or not.

Despite a lack of offensive production, Bonds' mere presence changes the entire complexion of the Giants' lineup. Entering Sunday, the Giants have scored 35 percent of their runs (15 of 42) following Bonds' 10 walks.

''Barry Bonds doesn't have the speed anymore, but his sense of reaching a base or taking the extra base is still there,'' Felipe Alou, the Giants manager, said.

Barry Bonds is on the verge of making history this year. Bodog has more odds on the MLB. Log on and check out Bodog for the odds, now.

715: Barry Bonds to Overtake Babe Ruth

The buzz within the San Francisco Giants is Barry Bonds.

Always was, always has been. Ever since Bonds' steroids issue, this Giant became the talk in all of baseball. Will the Major League Baseball (MLB) delete all those milestones Bonds accomplished with those steroids?

Is it fair and just to take all those away from a man who was cheating in the first place?

Now, Bonds is about to come up with the biggest highway robbery of them all. Overtake the legendary George Herman ''Babe'' Ruth using the illegal drug. Yes, and exactly that will happen sooner than many baseball pundits think as Bonds bid for no.715 this season.

Babe Ruth is only six homeruns ahead, while Bonds don't have any homeruns to show for yet, it's STILL a very young baseball season. Bonds may even surpass baseball's all-time homerun leader, Hank Aaron. Aaron, with 755 baseballs he rocketed out of the stadium, is merely holding a 47 homerun lead over the steroid-powered Giant.

The reason the media keep statistics, and the reason they care about statistical milestones, is that they assume some sort of emotional experience will accompany their creation and obliteration.

These moments are supposed to embody ideas that transcend the notion of grown men playing children's games, these moments are supposed to be a positive amalgamation of awe, evolution, inspiration, admiration and the macrobiotic potential of man. But the recent success of Bonds contains only two of those qualities, and maybe only the first.

Nevertheless, Barry Bonds will definitely overtake Babe Ruth this year. No matter what they say about Bonds, they can't delay the inevitable. And as this year's MLB baseball season heats up, the inevitable is only six homeruns away.
